MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Heat surprised a local high school principal nearly killed in a drunk driving crash.

Javi Perez has made many hospital visits since that crash back in April, but this trip definitely put a smile on his face.

Members of the Miami Heat and about 150 of his South Dade Senior High School students were waiting for Perez in the hallways of Baptist hospital.

What he thought was a routine checkup turned into a pep rally for the beloved educator.

As if that wasn't enough, Tissot watches and the Heat hooked him up with a little extra bling for his wrist, plus a $7,500 check to go towards his medical expenses.

Perez will be honored once again at the Heat-Lakers game on December 22nd as one of Miami's Hometown Heroes.

Perez says he still has one more surgery to go through, but the process of getting prosthetics should start in January. He hopes to be walking again June.
