Grieving Mother Appeals For Help After Longtime Librarian Gunned Down

MIAMI (CBSMiami) —- The grieving mother of a longtime Miami-Dade County librarian is pleading for the public's help after her son was gunned down while sitting in his car Monday night in Miami Gardens.
"My son was wonderful. I have two wonderful sons but this son was closest to me because he took care of me," said Pilar Humet, the victim's mother. "Somebody who did this, this is so difficult because I can not put into words the relationship that we have as a family because we are a very close family."
Humet wept as she spoke to CBS4's Peter D'Oench, saying that her son was devoted to taking care of her and his job at the library in Miami Lakes and their dogs. He had been a librarian with Miami-Dade for 21 years.
"You can't believe how much he did for his brother and nieces and nephews," she said. "I plead with people to help please so that this person will not commit the same crime. He was such a hard worker. He has never done anything wrong, ever. He did no smoking, no nothing, no drinking. He was like an angel in this world. Please help us."
Humet's family believes he stopped at a Dade County federal credit union at N.W. 2nd Ave. and 207th St. Monday night and believes someone may have been watching him when he went to the ATM. Family members say he was not robbed and say this could have been a botched robbery attempt.
Police say it was just before 9 p.m. when they responded to a call of an unresponsive male inside a vehicle that was stopped at a traffic light. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded and pronounced Humet dead at the scene.
His mother said, "There's no way for me to understand how could a person do this to him because he would never fight. He would never get into a fight with people. He was wonderful. Just ask his co-workers. He would always give to other people all the time."
"I hope someone will come forward because I do not want another family to be broken like ours. This is very very difficult," she said.
Humet's older brother Nick told D'Oench "I believe my older brother went to the ATM to check his balance. He did not take out any money. That is verified and he got back into his car, closed the window and headed back out to the street."
"Somebody I believe followed him and got behind him and shot through his back window when he pulled the trigger," said Nick Humet. He killed him for nothing. He had $40 and they never even took it. They just murdered him in cold blood and for what? To prove a point? To prove they are bad?"
"Now my mother is destroyed," he said. "She will never recover from this. You have to ask yourself: do you want this type of person out there? Do you want this type of murdered living near you? If you know something and I know people are busy but if you know something you have to speak out to get this person or persons off the street."
"They will take the life of your wife, your daughter, your child, your dog," he said. "We need to do our duty and help the police. Help your city."
Miami-Dade Libraries sent out a tweet about Humet's death, saying "Words cannot express the sadness we feel over the loss of our colleague Jaime Humet, who worked at Miami Lakes Branch. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle & friend. Help police find his killer."
The tweet urged people to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers if they can help.
Miami Gardens Police say they do not know why Humet was shot. They do not have a motive at this point.
They have been scouring the area for surveillance tape.
