Miami Gardens Churchgoers Pray Trayvon Martin's Mom
MIAMI GARDENS (CBS4) -- More than one hundred people gathered Friday night at a Miami Gardens church to pray for one of their fellow members as she awaits the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial.
Sybrina Fulton in a member of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church.
Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, is in Sanford as jurors deliberate the fate of the man who killed her son.
"We're praying for our member Sybrina," Pastor Arthur Jackson III said from the pulpit while music played in the background.
"Everyone is kind of like on pins and needles watching the trial," Jackson told CBS 4's Lauren Pastrana. "Preparing possibly for the worst but praying for the best."
Jackson also told parishioners to pray for all parents.
He said God would have the last word in the case.
"Whenever there are issues in our community, we always go to The Lord in prayer and that's what we're doing here tonight," Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver Gilbert said.
Gilbert is also a member of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church.
He is preaching a message of peace in his city no matter the verdict.
"We will do what it is that really shows a dignity for Trayvon," the mayor explained.
Pastor Jackson said the timing of the service was coincidental.
It was planned before it was clear the jury would begin deliberations Friday.
He said you can thank divine intervention for that.
"While they're deliberating, we'll pray," he said.
Jackson told the congregants he had snapped a photo of them to send to Sybrina Fulton to let her know her community was with her in spirit.
"If you've seen her demeanor throughout the entire process, you see a very strong person who believes in the power of prayer," Jackson said. "I believe she's held up incredible well given the circumstances."
