Miami-Dade Schools Grows Bus Fleet By 20 Percent
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami-Dade School District says that by adding 255 new buses this fall, it will save money.
That's right: save money.
The district unveiled its new buses on Friday, and although the new wheels set the district back $25 million, the students' new rides feature a 40-percent boost in fuel economy versus the current fleet.
However, most of the savings will come from ending maintenance on the older buses, which is handled by the district's eight facilities.
It's not just money that the district will be saving. The new rides will also save lives: each student will now wear a seat belt.
According to the Miami-Dade School District website, the fleet of what will soon be 1,595 buses is the largest district-owned fleet in the U.S. The buses escort over 60,000 students a year.
All 255 buses will debut on the first day of school, Aug. 20.
