Miami-Dade School Board Votes On New Police Chief
MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Miami-Dade County Public Schools has a new top cop.
The Miami-Dade School Board approved Miami Police Maj. Ian Moffett to the position of police chief during its meeting on Wednesday.
He has been a major for the last three years with the City of Miami Police Department and has been responsible for the Miami Police Department's Training & Personnel Development Section.
Before that, Moffett served 15-years on the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department.
He held the position of Police Captain and commanded the Central Operations Section of the schools police managing over 120 schools and district sites, member of the schools police District's Critical Incident Response Team (DCIRT), and oversaw 40 officers and civilian staff.
He also previously managed the schools police department's administrative section and was primarily responsible for the budget, training, accreditation, along with the Gang Free Schools and Community Initiative Grant, the Emergency Response and Crisis Management Grant.
He was also assigned to the Investigative Division as a Police Lieutenant and Detective Sergeant conducting internal affairs investigations on civilian employees and criminal follow up investigations.
He also helped opened the District's Office of the Inspector General and served as the Assistant to the Inspector General for six months. He also was a School Resource Officer at a middle and high school for a three year period.
Moffett replaces former chief Charles Hurley who resigned in February when the school system took steps to demote him amid allegations of sexual harassment against two female officers. Miami-Dade schools investigators found Hurley behaved inappropriately but not that he harassed the women.
The women have settled lawsuits in the case. Terms of the settlements were not disclosed.
