Miami-Dade School Board Employee Beaten, Robbed & Carjacked
MIAMI (CBS4) - A member of the Miami-Dade School Board was beaten and carjacked as she arrived to work on Friday morning, authorities tell CBS4 News.
Miami-Dade School Board police say the employee, who has not been identified, was walking into the Miami-Dade County Public School headquarters on the 1400 block of NE 2nd Avenue at around 8:15 a.m. when she was confronted by a man who began assaulting her.
Police say the suspect, identified as Shaun De Lopez, 24, was startled when confronted by a passerby and ran off with the victim's purse. De Lopez allegedly drove away with the victim's car.
In an attempt to stop the suspect, the victim tried to hold on to her car and was dragged for several feet.
The passerby helped the woman up and took her inside, where other employees called police and fire rescue units. The victim was taken to the hospital to be treated for unspecified wounds.
Police were later able to recover the stolen car at Northwest 79th Street and 30th Avenue. De Lopez was taken into custody, as well as his passenger, Tony Estevez, 20. Police say Estevez told officers he didn't know the car when stolen.
Both face Grand Theft Auto charges. Estevez was also charged with drug possession because officers allegedly found 30 grams of marijuana on him.
Police tell CBS4 News that De Lopez was released two weeks ago from jail for Grand Theft Auto charges, and Estevez was released 3 weeks ago on drug trafficking charges.
