According to investigators, detectives from MDPD's Tactical Narcotics Team (TNT) spotted a car driving erratically in the area of NE 79th Street & 2nd Avenue. Detectives stopped the vehicle and began to approach the driver, identified as Johnny A. Outler, Jr., 34, when he suddenly accelerated and almost struck the detectives.
The detectives followed Outler onto I-95 northbound, where he side-swiped an unmarked MDPD police vehicle.
The pursuit ended on I-95 at Ives Dairy Road when the driver crashed into a center dividing wall and tried to run away in foot.
A detective followed him into a wooded area, where a confrontation ensued. During the confrontation, officials say the detective fired, striking Outler in the lower abdominal area. He was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital, where police say he remains in stable condition.
