Miami-Dade Police Mourning Loss Of Canine Officer Rocco
MIAMI (CBS4) - The Miami-Dade Police department announced Thursday they have lost one of their own: Canine Officer Rocco.
Rocco, a 9-year-old Belgian Malinois, succumbed to prostate cancer.
Official say Rocco joined the force in February 2006 and was the partner of Officer Andy Giordani.
During his career, Rocco apprehended 72 subjects and conducted approximately 670 searches and was an elite member of the Canine Unit, cross trained for explosive detection and conducted roughly 280 searches, 5 article searches, and 102 public demonstrations, according to a release by MDPD.
During the apprehension of one suspect, officials say, the subject shot at Officer Giordani which struck a back-up officer and Canine Rocco. Rocco endured weeks of therapy during treatment for the gunshot wound and returned to the force with no lingering effects from the shooting.
