Miami Dade College To Unveil Section Of The Berlin Wall

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Local leaders are set to gather Sunday for the unveiling of a section of the Berlin Wall brought to South Florida.
The 12-foot tall, 3-foot wide, four-and-a-half ton section will be unveiled at Miami Dade College on the 25th anniversary of the dismantling of the wall.
"Twenty-five years ago the Berlin Wall came down, a Wall that had separated East and West Germany, and served as a symbolic and physical boundary between people, people who really had so much in common," said Miami Dade College President Eduardo J. Padron. "Today, we are unveiling a new symbol, one that can inspire our students at Miami Dade College, and the members of our community. That wall is now a bridge of understanding."
The wall is a gift from the Federal Republic of Germany to the City of Miami.
"This historical piece of the Berlin Wall stands as evidence that any barrier to the freedom of the people eventually falls, no matter how tall and strong it may look. The importance of this piece to Miami is that it stands as a symbol of hope for individuals whose countries of origin, particularly Cubans and Venezuelans, are living under the same ideology of oppression and persecution that erected the Berlin Wall," stated Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado.
Those who attend the unveiling will also be able to enjoy an outdoor exhibition with photo collages of the Berlin Wall over the 28 years of its existence.
There will also be free German food, beverages and T-shirts in the colors of the German flag.
The event starts at 1:30 p.m.
