Miami-Dade Co. Adopts No-Kill Animal Shelter Program
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Stray and unwanted animals living in Miami-Dade's animal shelters are officially on-track to be protected from euthanasia.
A resolution, which passed a county committee vote in mid-June and designates county animal shelters as no-kill, was adopted by Miami-Dade commissioners Tuesday.
The measure directs the mayor to provide a financing plan that gives a permanent home to stray and unwanted animals.
"Pet owners and animal lovers throughout Miami-Dade have been waiting for a no-kill policy to be implemented at our Animal Services Department," said Commissioner José "Pepe" Diaz.
To qualify as no-kill, an animal shelter must have a 90 percent or better rate of animals saved, according to Miami-Dade county rules.
