Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Dies Following Stroke
MIAMI- (CBS4) - Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Roberto Pineiro who had suffered from complications following a stroke died Thursday. He was appointed to serve as a County Court judge in 1989 and in 1996 he was appointed to the Circuit Court division.
"Judge Pineiro will be remembered for his strong work ethic and unfailing devotion to justice," Chief Judge Joel Brown said in a statement. "His legacy will always remain steadfast in the hearts and minds of our entire court family and so many others whose lives he has touched during the past two decades. We have all lost a true champion and a pillar of justice."
Pineiro was born in Cuba and arrived in South Florida at age 5. His parents fled Cuba following Fidel Castro's rise to power. Under Castro's regime, his family's coffee roasting plant and sugar refinery was seized, CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald reports.
Pineiro graduated from Duke University's law school and moved up the ranks from special prosecutor to public corruption. He worked for former state attorneys Richard Gerstein and Janet Reno.
Thursday, Flags were at half-staff at the Richard E. Gerstein Justice Building.
