Miami-Dade, Broward Among Healthiest In Florida
MIAMI (CBS4) - Compared to the rest of the state, Miami-Dade and Broward are some of the healthiest in Florida.
In a new study by the University of Wisconsin and the Robert Wood Foundation, Miami-Dade ranked 8th and Broward ranked 10th out of the state's 67 counties for health outcomes, according to The Sun-Sentinel.
Broward was cited for low rate of premature death, low obesity and smoking rates. Miami-Dade received high marks for its low premature death rate and its access to healthy foods. Compared to the rest of the nation, however, the two counties (along with the rest of the state) had high rates of sexually transmitted diseases, alcohol abuse and violent crime.
Federal, state and local figures from 2008 were used by researchers to compile the report. The chief analyst of the state figures for the study, Dr. Claude Fox, director of the Florida Public Health Institute, said he predicts the numbers for the state will get worse over the next few years because of high unemployment and less medical attention during the recession.
Collier County, which includes Naples, was rated the healthiest in the state; Union County, west of Jacksonville, was rated the least healthiest in the state.
