Miami Boy's Mentor Steps In To Assist Santa This Christmas

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - An 11-year old had a special wish this Christmas. He wanted nothing for himself, only gifts for his family and new job for his mom who was recently laid off.
So the boy's mentor, Miami Police Major Delrish Moss, decided to give Santa a hand and enlisted several of his brothers in blue to be his elves.
Moss and "Matthew" spent part of Christmas Eve shopping for his family.
"I would like to have a lot of items that they will enjoy," said Matthew.

Moss said he met Matthew a few years ago when he played football for the police athletic league.
"He worked hard to pay his own way to pay his registration fee for the athletic league," said Moss, who added, "He's working at a car wash right now to raise money to pay for Christmas presents for his family, so Matthew is tops in my book."
A week ago, Matthew sent Moss a letter which he shared with his fellow officers like Tommy Reyes.
"He explained that he's not to have a Christmas this year but wanted to give his family a Christmas," said Reyes.
In the letter, Matthew wrote about how his mom had lost her job, his grandfather had passed away and he was bullied at school.
"He also talked about how much he cares that his mother is not working and that he'd like to find a job for her," said Moss.
Some of Moss' brothers in blue posted about Matthew and his letter on Facebook and within hours the Christmas spirit started moving in from around the world.
"A cop in Ireland sent me $50," said Moss. "Another police officer friend from Hialeah gave me $65 and it just snowballed from there."
The officers raised more than $500 to help Matthew and his family. Matthew said he was surprised when the police showed up at his door and said they were going shopping.
"Surprised to see everybody, cops knocking on my door. I thought somebody was going to go to Jail. Ha,ha,ha,ha," said Matthews.
When their shopping spree total at Target exceeded the money they had raised, Moss didn't hesitate to cover the difference.
Matthew said Moss and his fellow officers were a true blessing for his family and wishes them all a very Merry Christmas.
