Lockdown Of Miami Beach Preschool Over Suspicious Package Lifted

MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) - A precautionary lockdown of a Miami Beach preschool was lifted late Monday morning after a Miami-Dade police bomb squad dealt with a suspicious package found nearby.
Miami Beach police said a call came in around 8 a.m. about a suspicious package at the post office building at 525 71st Street. The postal employees were evacuated.
"A postal employee discovered what he described as a manila envelope that appeared to be open. On initial inspection, there were no markings in terms of an address or a return sender. There were some wires exposed in the package. The package was immediately isolated," said Miami Beach police Officer Ernesto Rodriguez.
"The postal service does train their employees on what to look for in suspicious packages, such as wires hanging out, packages that are leaking powders or liquids, and this employee was alert and able to isolate the package so that the remainder of the employees were safe," said Blanca Alvarez with the US Postal Service.
The nearby Happy Kids preschool at 7134 Byron Avenue was placed on lockdown and the 7100 block of Carlyle Avenue along with the adjacent parking lot was closed. Seventy-first street between Abbott and Dickens Avenue was also closed.
The bomb squad was called and determined it was not a threat. Police have not said what was in the envelope.
