Metrorail Ridership Hit New Record For Heat Championship Parade
MIAMI (CBS4) - Miami-Dade transit officials are celebrating a feat of their own, thanks to the other winners in town.
Ridership hit an all time high on June 24, the day the Miami Heat paraded through Downtown Miami to celebrate their NBA championship title, officials announced Monday. The trains saw an 75 percent increase in passengers above the average weekday ridership. In total, more than 117,000 people took advantage of Metrorail which helped to alleviate parking headaches in Downtown Miami.
"I'm thrilled that so many of our residents chose public transit to get to downtown and celebrate the Miami HEAT's latest NBA Championship," said Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. "All of our transit mobility options provide green, cost-effective alternatives to simply getting in the car and sitting in traffic. I encourage our residents and visitors to take advantage of them year-round."
Officials are hopeful those who took the Metrorail the day of the parade consider it an alternative to get to events and destinations, like the recently added route to Miami International Airport.
