MDPD: Two-Year-Old Girl Drowned
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A toddler died Sunday evening after what police said appears to be an accidental drowning.
The Miami-Dade Police Department is investigating the drowning that happened in the pool at a home located at 7265 S.W. 86th Avenue.
According to police, the toddler was two-years-old.
A neighbor told CBS4's Maggie Newland the family had some friends over Sunday afternoon. Police said adults were in the pool when the two-year-old somehow slipped underwater about 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
"I heard screams of horror and that got me over the edge because it's something that you'll never forget," said J.C. Mena.
The frantic screams were coming from Mena's neighbor's home.
"I saw the ambulance and a guy running out waving frantically like come here come here come here ," Mena recalled.
It's believed the girl was only in the water a short amount of time and police said once she was noticed in the water, she was pulled from the pool and the family performed CPR on her.
"It's unknown how long she was in the water but there was family inside the pool with her when she did go under," said Officer Robin Pinkard with Miami-Dade Police.
She was transported to a hospital where police said she died.
"We're taking it really hard ever since this happened. The TV's been off. We're sitting in the family room just in silence," Mena said.
According to neighbors, the neighborhood is close-knit and everyone's grieving for the family who had three young children.
Mena said he knew the father well.
"His daughters are always in the pool we're always playing with them," Mena said, adding, "Honestly no one deserves this but especially him, like this guy I've never seen him sad or anything he always has a smile on his face."
