Mayor Gimenez Vetoes Restoring Workers' Pay, Offers Compromise
MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez vetoed a decision by county commissioners to restore most workers' pay Saturday.
According to our news partners The Miami Herald, the veto forced a new vote Tuesday on the issue, which would have no longer required employees to contribute 5 percent of their pay toward healthcare costs.
The mayor offered a potential compromise, proposing the lowest-paid county workers should get a one-time bonus instead. If an employee makes less than $40,000 a year they would get a $1,500 bonus. Those who make between $40,000 and $50,000 would get a $1,000 bonus.
"I listened to the commission," Gimenez told the Miami Herald."This way we can give a little bit of relief to our lowest-paid employees and not break the bank."
Mayor Gimenez emphasized that restoring all workers' pay would most benefit those who are on the higher end of the pay scale, according to the Miami Herald. He also argued that there is not enough money to restore all employees' pay.
Gimenez had until Sunday to sign the veto.
