Mayor: Alton Road Construction Ahead Of Schedule
MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) – Drivers impacted by recent construction along Alton Road on Miami Beach will get some traffic relief earlier than expected.
Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine says the construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2014 which is seven months ahead of schedule.
The construction has closed part of the main thoroughfare down the beach to install pump stations that will provide flood relief in the area.
"I am thankful to all of our state partners who have worked so diligently in speeding up construction along one of Miami Beach's major arteries for our residents, business and visitors," said Miami Beach Mayor Levine in a press release.
Commissioners helped to speed up the process by easing noise ordinances so construction crews could work longer days.
The new projected completion date is December 31, 2014.
In an effort to improve access during construction, the City of Miami Beach launched a free trolley service last month that operates from Fifth Street to Lincoln Road, along Alton Road and West Avenue, with 21 stops along the way.
Trolleys service runs approximately every 10 minutes from 8 a.m. to midnight, Monday through Sunday.
The city also negotiated free, four hour parking at the Fifth & Alton Garage with the use of a trolley voucher.
