Marlins Welcome New Mgr. Mike Redmond
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Marlins formally introduced Mike Redmond as the team's 13th manager in team history Friday afternoon.
"I think what really stands out is that he's genuine," said Marlins head of baseball operations, Larry Beinfest. "He's Mike Redmond and he's always been Mike Redmond. There's nothing fake about Mike Redmond."
Redmond interviewed for the job last week and signed a three-year contract with the Marlins on Thursday. Redmond has a big rebuilding job ahead of him after the Marlins' lone season under the helm of Ozzie Guillen. The Marlins were 69-93 last season and finished in last place in the National League East.
"To the fans, things are going to get better," Redmond said Friday. "I can't wait to get started. I think anyone that knows me, especially the guys in this room, they understand my passion. You understand my loyalty. I will give every ounce of effort out on the field."
Redmond played with the Marlins as a catcher from 1998-2004. The former Marlins catcher has spent the last two seasons in the Toronto Blue Jays organization coaching in the minor leagues. Redmond retired from his 13-year Major League career following the 2010 season with a .287 career average with 13 home runs and 243 RBI.
He was named the Midwest League Manager of the Year in 2011, his first campaign in the dugout, after guiding the single-A Lansing Lugnuts to a 77-60 record and an appearance in the ML finals. Overall, Redmond is 155-115 in two seasons as a minor league manager.
