Marlins Trade Logan Morrison To Seattle Mariners
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Once the Miami Marlins signed first baseman Garret Jones, Logan Morrison's days with the team were numbered. Wednesday, the Marlins finally pulled the trigger and traded LoMo.
MLB sources confirmed to Greg Johns of Mariners.com the Marlins have traded Morrison to Seattle for right-handed relief pitcher Carter Capps. The now former Marlin, Morrison will join a Mariners team that is on a free agent spending spree this offseason.
The Marlins receive the 23-year-old Capps who appeared in 53 games last year and posted a 5.49 ERA while having a strikeout-to-walk ratio of almost 3-1. Capps posted a WHIP last season of 1.571, but had a WAR of -0.6 and a career WAR of -0.5.
Morrison has only played in more than 93 games once in his career in 2011. He has a career batting average of .249 with 42 home runs and 162 RBI's. Last season, Morrison played in 85 games and hit .242 with 6 home runs and 36 RBI's. LoMo has a career WAR over -0.1 and was at -0.5 last season.
Morrison will become arbitration eligible next season, and is scheduled to become a free agent in 2017.
The trade of Morrison has almost completed the Marlins' makeover of its infield. The Marlins signed Rafael Furcal to play second base, will start the aforementioned Jones at first base, and keep Adeiny Hechavarria at shortstop.
The big hole at third base has yet to be filled by the Marlins and may not be in the near future. The Marlins have plenty of time to fill the position, which will be a player keeping the seat warm until Colin Moran is ready to take over on the main roster.
