MIAMI (CBSMiami) – His career may have been cut way too short but the Miami Marlins are never going to forget Jose Fernandez or what he meant to the team and the community they call home.
On Monday night, just a day after the 24 year old died tragically in a boating accident, every Marlins player wore a #16 Fernandez jersey in honor of their teammate when Miami faced the New York Mets at Marlins Park.
Prior to the game, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria told CBS4's Jim Berry that after this game nobody would ever wear #16 again.
It will be the first number to be retired by the Marlins franchise, aside from Jackie Robinson's No. 42, which is universally retired for all teams in Major League Baseball.
In four years with the Marlins, Fernandez amassed a 38-17 record with a 2.58 ERA and 589 strikeouts in 471.1 career innings pitched.
The two-time All-Star was the National League's Rookie of the Year in 2013.
Aside from being one of the best pitchers in baseball, Fernandez was very active in the community and had a special connection with the people of Miami.
