Marlins' Steve Cishek Named NL Co-Player Of The Week
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Marlins have been playing some great baseball over the past couple weeks and are clawing their way back into the postseason discussion.
One player in particular that has excelled of late is closer Steve Cishek and his recent stretch of saves has not gone unnoticed by the world of baseball.
Major League Baseball announced on Monday that Cishek has been named the co-National League Player of the Week, along with New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom.
In the week spanning from July 21 through July 27 Cishek recorded five saves in five opportunities. He pitched 5.0 innings, giving up one earned run, two hits and no walks while striking out eight batters for a tiny 1.80 ERA.
The run of great pitching took place during the best seven-game road trip in Marlins franchise history, in which the team won six of seven games played at Atlanta and Houston.
Cishek is currently having one of the best stretches of his young career, collecting six saves over the past eight days. No Marlins closer has ever matched that kind of production.
This season Cishek has converted 26 of his 29 save opportunities and is currently tied for the eighth most saves in all of baseball.
