Marlins' Stanton Posts Recovery Selfie

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Miami Marlins' star slugger Giancarlo Stanton has posted before and after photos of his recovery from being hit in the face by a pitch.

The selfie, which he put on Instagram, showed him with a swollen face and stitches on his upper lip.

Stanton was hit in the face with a fastball thrown by Milwaukee Brewers' pitcher Mike Fiers in a game on Thursday September 11th.

He was carted off the field and taken to a Milwaukee hospital. He sustained multiple facial fractures, dental damage and cuts, but it was reported surgery was not required.

Reed Johnson came on to bat for Stanton and was also hit by a pitch.

Casey McGehee, the Marlins' third-baseman, was waiting in the on-deck circle turn to when they second incident occurred. McGehee started to yell at Fiers, visibly upset with what just happened.

Marlins' Manager Mike Redmond came out of the dugout fuming and both benches cleared.

No punches were thrown by either team, but Redmond and McGehee were ejected from the ballgame.

In a post-game interview, Fiers apologized to Stanton and hoped him a speedy recovery.

Stanton had tweeted the day after being hit, "The amount of support I have received from you guys has been tremendous & Heartfelt. I'm much better today & deeply appreciate your prayers!"

In the picture posted Tuesday, a smiling Stanton looked a little roughed up but in a good spirits, reaffirming he is feeling much better.

The Marlins were hunting for a wild card spot into the playoffs, but the loss of Stanton may have eliminated those chances. Since Stanton went down, the team has gone 5-5, losing ground to wild-card favorites, San Francisco Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates.
