Marlins' Stanton Out 4-6 Weeks
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Marlins' best power hitter and lone All-Star Giancarlo Stanton will be out of action until at least early August after arthroscopic knee surgery cleaned out some loose bodies in his knee.
According to CBS4 news partner the Miami Herald, team president David Samson said the surgery was successful and that the timeline for Stanton's return to the team is between four to six weeks.
Stanton's surgery forced him out of Tuesday's All-Star Game and Monday's Home Run Derby. He was replaced in the Home Run Derby by Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutcheon and in the All-Star Game by Washington's Bryce Harper.
Stanton is the face of the future for the Marlins and his exit from the lineup will leave a large power gap that someone else in the lineup has to fill.
By the end of July, the Marlins hope to welcome back Emilio Bonifacio and former closer Juan Carlos Oviedo. But, with the Marlins sitting nine games out of first place, the opportunity to stay in the pennant race is rapidly closing.
