Marlins Stanton Leaves Game After Being Hit By Pitch
PORT ST. LUCIE (AP) — Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton left Sunday's game after being hit by a pitch in the left wrist.
The Marlins said Stanton was going to a hospital to be checked. They said he was being treated for a bruise.
"It's not too bad right now. It seemed like initially that my hand locked up. We'll see tomorrow. It'll be nice and fat," Stanton said.
Stanton was hit by a fastball from New York Mets reliever Chris Schwinden in the third inning. Stanton was met at first base by assistant trainer Mike Kozak and Miami manager Ozzie Guillen, then was taken out of the game.
Stanton was hit a team-high nine times last season.
The Marlins beat the Mets 4-2 in a game stopped after five innings because of rain.
Miami starter Mark Buehrle made his first spring outing against major league hitters. He gave up two runs and five hits in four innings. Buehrle faced the University of Miami at Marlins Park on March 6.
"They were hitting the ball hard. I like to get softer outs," Buehrle said.
"I fell behind in the count a few times, and my changeup wasn't the greatest, but overall I felt good and got my pitches in," he said.
Buehrle gave up two runs and five hits.
"I made it through four innings. That was the main goal," he said.
The free-spending Marlins signed Buehrle as a free agent in December. The 32-year-old Buehrle pitched all 12 of his previous seasons with the Chicago White Sox.
The Marlins scored three times in the fifth on Gaby Sanchez's bases-loaded walk, a sacrifice fly by John Buck and an RBI single by Chris Coghlan, all off reliever Jon Rauch.
Josh Satin and Josh Thole drove in the Mets' runs.
