Marlins Sinking Fast In June...Again
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Marlins have gone from the hottest team in baseball in the month of May to ice cold halfway through the month of June.
In June, the Marlins are 3-8 as they prepare to close an absolutely abysmal home stretch that has seen the Marlins go 1-7 with one more home game left to play against the Boston Red Sox Wednesday night.
While it's not nearly as bad as June 2011 when the Marlins lost more than 20 games in the month, the Marlins have gone from being tied for first place to start the month to fourth place as Wednesday's game nears.
During the current home stand, the Marlins are 1-7 with one game left to play. The Marlins aren't just losing games either, they're getting destroyed.
The Marlins have given up at least 4 runs in 4 games during the homestretch. Overall, the Fish have given up 5.8 runs per game during the home stand, while scoring just 2.1 runs per game.
The Marlins thought they had an idea that would work when they opened up the stadium this week. It snapped a winless streak during the home stand, but it was only good for one victory so far.
Part of Miami's problem has been outfield slugger Giancarlo Stanton. After exploding on the scene in May, his June production has looked more like his brutal month of April. Stanton is hitting .216 over his last 10 games and has just one home run and 2 RBI's during that stretch.
Stanton's average has dropped 10 points since peaking at .298 in the first few games of June. Stanton's splits showed that he hits nearly 100 points better against left-handed pitching (.357) versus right handed pitching (.265).
It also doesn't help matters when the pitching rotation's Mark Buehrle, Ricky Nolasco, Anibal Sanchez and Carlos Zambrano have combined for a 2-9 record thus far in June.
The Marlins will head back out trying to right the ship Wednesday night to finish the team's home stand before heading out on the road for six straight games on the road against AL East foes the Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays.
