Marlins Sign First Baseman Garret Jones
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Logan Morrison's days with the Miami Marlins appear to be numbered after the team inked a deal with former Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Garret Jones.
The Marlins agreed to terms with Jones on a $7.75 million, two-year contract. The deal still has to be finalized and Jones had to pass a physical.
Jones has played six years and is a career .254 hitter with 102 home runs and has played in at least 144 games each of the past four seasons. Jones is scheduled to make $2.75 million in 2014 and $5 million in 2015.
Jones lost his starting job late in the regular season and hit only twice in the playoffs. He hit .233 with 15 home runs and 51 RBI's in 2013.
Just in the past week, the Marlins have added catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, infielder Rafael Furcal, and now Jones. Furcal is expected to play second base so the team can keep Adeiny Hecchavaria at shortstop.
Morrison was playing first base, but now is squarely on the trade block with the annual Winter Meetings underway in Orlando. Morrison has struggled with injuries the last two years and hit .242 with six homers in 85 games last year.
