Marlins Select UNC 3B Colin Moran In MLB Draft
NEW YORK (CBSMiami) – For the first time in 17 years, the Miami Marlins used their first-round pick in the Major League Baseball draft on a collegiate star.
The Marlins, picking sixth overall in the draft, selected North Carolina Tar Heels star third baseman Colin Moran Thursday night. Moran played for the Tar Heels this season and was named the ACC Player of the Year while driving in 86 RBI's and ranking 23rd nationally with a .478 on-base percentage, according to the Charlotte News Observer.
The one area that some scouts picked apart in Moran's game was a perceived lack of power. He only had 13 home runs this year, but also earned 60 walks to only 22 strikeouts on the season.
Moran is only 20-years-old and was named national freshman of the year in 2011 by Baseball America.
For Moran, baseball runs in his blood. According to the News Observer, his brother Brian was a seventh-round pick in 2009 and his uncle is B.J. Surhoff who was the number one overall pick in the 1985 Major League Baseball draft.
