Marlins Rookie Receiving Death Threats
MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – Florida Marlins rookie Scott Cousins spoke out Friday after being threatened by San Francisco general manager Brian Sabean.
Cousins was involved in a collision at home plate that left San Francisco Giants star catcher Buster Posey out for the season due to an injury suffered during the incident.
Cousins said he has been receiving death threats despite repeatedly apologizing for the collision. On replays of the incident, once Cousins realized that Posey was hurt, he immediately went to Posey's side as a trainer rushed the field.
Against that backdrop, Sabean chose to go on his weekly radio show and call the play malicious and unnecessary. Sabean then threatened Cousins saying, "We'll have a long memory."
"I hope and believe that Mr. Sabean's comments were made in the heat of the moment and are based more on his fondness for Buster Posey than on any animosity towards me," Cousins said in the statement. "This situation is still an open wound for many, including myself. As I have stated previously, nobody outside of Buster feels worse about his injury than I do."
Cousins went on to say that he has tried to contact Posey several times but has not been able to connect with the injured Giants star.
Marlins outfielder Logan Morrison came to Cousins defense against Sabean.
"When has he played in the big leagues? When has he played in the minor leagues," Morrison asked. "He's getting death threats from people. This is his hometown, San Francisco. He's worried about his family and his friends that are there. And now (Sabean) is going to make comments like that? It's ignorant, it's inappropriate and he has no idea what the hell he's talking about."
And Sabean will have to answer to Major League Baseball about his comments as well. According to ESPN.com, Joe Torre, who oversees MLB operations, will discuss the comments with Sabean soon.
