Marlins No Longer Offering Upper Deck Tickets
MIAMI GARDENS (CBS4) - Sun Life Stadium will no longer have a nose-bleed section. At least when it comes to Marlins games.
The team announced Monday that the upper deck of the stadium will be closed to fans for the remainder of the 2010-2011 season.
The team blames poor attendance in the section, according to CBS4 news partners The Miami Herald.
"It was an operational decision," said Marlins spokesperson P.J. Loyello. "We don't sell a whole lot of upper deck seats."
By closing the section, the team also saves money by not having to staff ushers, concessions and security.
Lovello adds that any fans who hold tickets in the section will be automatically "upgraded" to a infield box seats at no additional cost.
"To get more people in the lower bowl makes for a better atmosphere," Loyello said. "It looks better and it's better ambience."
The Marlins have the lowest fan attendance among the 30 major-league teams, averaging just over 18,000 per game.
The changes will be in effect for the remaining 31 games in the regular season. The only exception being the last home game on September 28, when the face the Washington Nationals. It will be the last Marlins game played at Sun Life Stadium as the team will move to their new Little Havana stadium next season.
