Marlins Inquire About Athletics' Gio Gonzalez
MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – The Miami Marlins are searching for serious help to their starting rotation before next year's inaugural season in the new Marlins Stadium.
A name that may be familiar to some in South Florida could be near the top of the list, but the price to get him here may be too steep for any team not named the Red Sox or Yankess.
The Marlins contacted the Oakland Athletics about trying to acquire left-handed starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez.
The Hialeah-native would plug a huge hole in the rotation and could allow the Marlins to try to concentrate on acquiring more sluggers for the lineup.
Gonzalez is 38-32 for his career and has an ERA of 3.93 and has thrown 511 strikeouts to just 264 walks in his young career.
But, a quality starting left handed pitcher is gold in Major League Baseball and the A's are well aware of this fact.
According to CBS4 news partner the Miami Herald, the A's told the Marlins that they would expect a group of prospects in return that contained either Logan Morrison or Mike Stanton. The Marlins immediately rejected any sort of deal.
The A's can hold onto Gonzalez for an inexpensive price and either trade him to the highest bidder in the offseason, or wait for a team to come calling at next season's trade deadline.
Gonzalez won't be re-signed by the A's, so he's likely to be moved somewhere in the next year.
