Marlins Hire Mike Redmond As New Manager
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Marlins have agreed to terms on a three-year contract with Mike Redmond to become the team's new manager.
Redmond interviewed for the job last week and is the 13th manager in team history. If Redmond's name sounds familiar, it's because he played with the Marlins as a catcher from 1998-2004.
Redmond has a big rebuilding job ahead of him after the Marlins' lone season under the helm of Ozzie Guillen. The Marlins were 69-93 last season and finished in last place in the National League East.
Ozzie Guillen wasted no time wishing Redmond luck with his new job.
"Congrats Mike Redmon for u (sic) new job. Good luck buddy. U have great guys going to play for you," Guillen wrote on Twitter. "Hope the best for you. U rae (sic) a good baseball man and you will have fun whit the players."
The former Marlins catcher has spent the last two seasons in the Toronto Blue Jays organization coaching in the minor leagues.
He was named the Midwest League Manager of the Year in 2011, his first campaign in the dugout, after guiding the single-A Lansing Lugnuts to a 77-60 record and an appearance in the ML finals. In 2012, he managed single-A Dunedin to a 78-55 record and a berth in the Florida State League playoffs, where the Blue Jays lost in the first round to eventual-champion Lakeland.
Overall, Redmond is 155-115 in two seasons as a minor league manager.
A former catcher, Redmond retired from his 13-year Major League career following the 2010 season with a .287 career average with 13 home runs and 243 RBI.
An official press conference has been scheduled by the Marlins for Friday at 1:30 p.m.
