Marlins GM Says Stanton, McGehee Won't Be Traded
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Marlins season has gone through several ups and downs and as the team approaches the All-Star break they find themselves three games below .500 and six games behind first place Atlanta in the NL East (as of July 8).
There has been speculation that the Marlins could be sellers when the MLB non-waiver trade deadline arrives on July 31 and there are several teams around the league that would love to get their hands on some of the big bats in Miami's lineup.
Marlins general manager Dan Jennings put some of those thoughts to rest this week when he told USA Today Sports that Giancarlo Stanton and Casey McGehee would not be made available to any teams seeking to improve their rosters for a late-season run at the playoffs.
Miami has said on multiple occasions that they would like to lock up Stanton to a long-term contract but have been unable to do so as of yet. Stanton will be eligible for free agency following the 2016 season so the Marlins still have some time to work out a deal with the franchise player.
Stanton is currently leading the National League in home runs (21) and RBIs (62) while boasting a .305 batting average. He will be the only Marlins player (as of now) representing the team at the All-Star game next week.
McGehee is one of five players vying for the Final Man Vote for a spot on the NL All-Star roster and based on the season he's having, is quite deserving of the spot. McGehee leads the Marlins with a .322 batting average and has 53 RBIs. He leads the NL in hits (110) and leads all of baseball in batting average with runners in scoring position (.398).
When asked about the possibility of McGehee being traded before the deadline, Jennings put it simply when he told USA Today Sports "He ain't going nowhere, either."
