Marlins' Furcal Suffers Another Injury Setback
PEARL, MS (AP) — Rafael Furcal's second attempt at coming back from injuries didn't have a good start.
The Miami Marlins infielder aggravated a groin injury while playing second base for Double-A Jacksonville on Friday.
Jacksonville manager Andy Barkett said Furcal felt tightness in his groin while covering second base and left the game in the fourth inning. Barkett said Furcal is considered day to day.
The 36-year-old Furcal has been on the disabled list since the beginning of the season, initially because of a hamstring injury. His first attempt at a comeback ended on Sunday after nine games in the minors when he left a game with tightness in his groin.
Furcal declined an interview following the game, limping slightly as he walked off the field on a chilly night.
Before the injury, the three-time All Star was 1 for 2 with an opposite-field single and also fielded two ground balls cleanly.
"We'll just see how he feels tomorrow," Barkett said. "He's been working really hard, trying to get back. He moved around fine in pregame. He just hasn't played in a year and he's trying to get his body right. I feel for the guy. He's a great player and all we want is to get him back in the big leagues. I know he's a little frustrated and we're all frustrated for him because he's such a competitor. But at the same time, we've got to be cautious."
Furcal signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Marlins after sitting out all of 2013 with an elbow injury. Furcal was an All-Star with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2012, hitting .264 with five homers, 49 RBIs and 12 stolen bases.
