Marlins Call Up Two Top Prospects
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Marlins continued their youth movement Monday by sending Marcell Ozuna and Derek Dietrich down to the minor leagues and calling up top prospect Christian Yelich and Jake Marisnick.
Yelich and Marisnick were playing for the Jacksonville Suns on Monday when they were both pulled from the game to be brought up to the show. Yelich has long been one of the Marlins' top two prospects along with pitcher Jose Fernandez.
Yelich was a first round pick in 2010 out of Westlake High School and in four seasons in the minor leagues has hit .313 with 36 home runs and 163 RBI's. In his most recent stop in Jacksonville, Yelich hit .280 with 7 home runs and 29 RBI's. He also had a .518 slugging percentage and .883 OPS.
Marisnick has always had the defense, but his output at the plate was sometimes in question. But, he's turned it on while playing for the Jacksonville Suns, hitting .295 with 12 home runs and 46 RBI's.
If Yelich takes over in center field and Marisnick takes over in left field, the Marlins will have one of the best, young outfields in Major League Baseball, at least from a prospect point of view. Both players could help take the load off Giancarlo Stanton to provide the offense for Miami.
Ozuna will likely be back in the majors this season, depending on how Marisnick and Yelich play for the time they are with the Marlins.
