Marlins Bring Mark Buehrle In For Visit
MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – The Miami Marlins' first priority in the offseason is to add quality starting pitching to the rotation.
Tuesday, the Marlins brought in southpaw Mark Buehrle in for a visit. Buehrle has a history with Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen, as Buehrle pitched for Guillen with the Chicago White Sox.
Buehrle was given the royal treatment on Tuesday including a tour of the brand new Marlins ballpark in Little Havana.
The Marlins could use a quality pitcher to add to the rotation. Assuming ace Josh Johnson returns to form in 2012, Buehrle could fill in a role surrounding Anibal Sanchez, thus giving the Marlins three quality starters.
If Chris Volstad and/or Ricky Nolasco can put it all together, the Marlins could have a good four man rotation. But, that's assuming Josh Johnson returns to the team ready to go after missing most of 2011.
The flirtation with Buehrle was followed Wednesday with a meeting with former New York Mets shortstop/second baseman Jose Reyes.
The Marlins are also expected to travel to the Dominican Republic this week to watch a private workout for Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.
The Marlins are considered to have the best chance to sign Cespedes if they like his workout.
