MIAMI (CBSMiami) – For the second time in as many days, the Miami Marlins have made another trade that could greatly improve their 2015 roster.
The Marlins wanted to add a top-level starting pitcher to their rotation and it appears they've for their man.
In a trade with the Cincinnati Reds, Miami acquired starter Mat Latos in exchange for pitcher Anthony DeSclafani and catching prospect Chad Wallach.
Latos suffered through an injury riddled 2014 but when healthy still put up numbers that are worthy of a top-of-the-rotation starter.
He only pitched 102 1/3 innings last season but still boasted a 3.25 ERA, striking out 6.5 batters and walking 2.3 per nine innings pitched. The strikeout numbers are actually below his career averages.
Over the previous four years Latos averaged 200 innings while filling the role of a number one pitcher.
The Marlins also made a smaller deal on Thursday, picking up right-handed pitcher Andre Rienzo from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for lefty Dan Jennings.
Rienzo started 21 games for the White Sox between 2013 and 2014, putting up a record of 6-8 with a combined ERA of 5.89 in 120 2/3 innings pitched.
