Marlins Acquire Mike Cameron From Red Sox
MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – The old adage of one man's trash being another man's treasure applies perfectly to the Florida Marlins' latest move. Tuesday night, the Marlins acquired 38-year-old Mike Cameron from the Boston Red Sox.
Cameron is past his prime and provides nothing as a hitter, but the Marlins want his gold-glove winning fielding ability and hope his veteran presence can help spark the team.
The Red Sox had given up on Cameron and were sending him to the minor leagues after he hit just .149 in 94 at-bats in 2011. For his career, Cameron is one of the few current players who have at least 250 home runs and 250 stolen bases.
"I think you're looking for production, and we still think this guy can help us," Marlins president Larry Beinfest told CBS4 news partner the Miami Herald.
Cameron should be in town for Wednesday's game and the Marlins will only be on the hook for roughly $300,000 of Cameron's $3.6 million salary for 2011.
