Miami Heat Re-Signs Chalmers, Jones
MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – Free agent point guard Mario Chalmers showed up to the Miami Heat's practice facility Thursday with a Heat t-shirt on. That should have been the tip to what will happen Friday.
Sure enough, the Miami HEAT announced Friday that they have re-signed guard Mario Chalmers. The team also confirmed that they re-signed free agent forward James Jones.
Jones has appeared in 447 regular season career games (73 starts) over eight seasons. During his NBA career, with four different teams, he has averaged 6.3 points, 2.3 rebounds and 18.9 minutes while shooting 40.2 percent from the field, 40.2 percent from three-point range and 85.7 percent from the foul line.
Chalmers was an average point guard at best during the regular season, but as the Heat made their way to the NBA Finals; he was a key cog in the wheel to nearly make the Heat world champions.
But, the main reason the Heat were intent on keeping Chalmers was that there was simply nothing better on the free agency front that the Heat could afford.
Chalmers has developed good chemistry with the Big Three and will be the team's starting point guard going forward. He averaged 7.8 points, 2.1 assists, and 1.3 steals per game in the Heat's playoff run last season.
The only thing that could change Chalmers' role with the Heat was if somehow, the Knicks amnestied Chuncey Billups and he made it through the waiver process to the point that he became an unrestricted free agent.
