Marino Doubts Cowher Will Return
MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – As soon as Tony Sparano was fired, the speculation began as to whether the Miami Dolphins could somehow manage to bring former Super Bowl winning coach/current CBS analyst Bill Cowher to take over the team.
But, Cowher's broadcasting partner, and legendary Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino is throwing cold water on the possibility of Cowher returning to the sidelines.
"I would love to see him be the Dolphins coach," Marino said in a recording provided to CBS4 by the Dolphins. "If he wanted to coach again, it'd be great for the NFL. I don't think his mindset is that he wants to coach again."
Marino continued, "He may change that over time, but my feeling is that he's a pretty straight forward guy that tells the truth most of the time. And he said on TV that he doesn't have any plans on coming back and I believe him."
If Marino's hunch is correct, it would eliminate one of the best possible coaching candidates for the Fins. But that doesn't necessarily mean that the Fins can't land a big name coach.
Presumably, the Dolphins second call after Cowher should be former Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher. He would bring with him a Super Bowl pedigree and has a career record of 142 – 140.
After Fisher, the waters get a little murkier. The Fins could choose to move fast as soon as the season ends, but there could be candidates who could whacked by their current team at the end of the season.
Most notable among coaches who could become available is Eagles head coach Andy Reid.
No coaching hire can be made until after the season. In addition, under the Rooney Rule, the Fins will have to interview a minority candidate before any coaching move can be made.
