Marijuana Legalization Effort Draws $425K
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A medical marijuana legalization group hit a new high in the month of November.
People United for Medical Marijuana said it raised $425,896. Most of the money came from Orlando attorney John Morgan's firm, which donated more than $400,000, according to News Service of Florida.
So far, the group has raised about $1.3 million as it seeks to collect enough petition signatures to get the legalization measure on the November 2014 election ballot.
The group needs to submit 683,149 signatures to the state but has only submitted 146,283 verified signatures as of Wednesday afternoon according to the Division of Elections website.
Supporters also are awaiting a ruling by the Florida Supreme Court about the proposed ballot wording. Attorney General Pam Bondi and legislative leaders are trying to block the measure because they say the ballot wording is flawed.
