Margate Police Suspect Toddler Drowned In Family Pool
MARGATE (CBSMiami) – An investigation is underway in the death of a Margate toddler who police suspect drowned in the family pool.
Margate police said when officers arrived at home in the 600 block of SW 51st Street they found a two year old boy on a couch in the living room who was unresponsive. He was pronounced dead around 3:30 p.m.
According to police spokesman Sgt. Efrain Suarez, the boy was left in the care of a family member who found him in the swimming pool. The boy was pulled from the pool and placed on the couch.
Suarez said the caregiver contacted police "a short time later".
According to Mark Riordan with the Department of Children and Families there were two children in the home: the two year old boy who died and 12-year old girl. Riordan said the girl was taken into DCF protective custody and will meet with experts from Henderson Behavioral Health who will help her through this traumatic incident.
Police suspect the toddler accidentally drowned but the investigation remains open pending the results of an autopsy.
