BSO: Man Swindled 90-Year-Old Out Of Thousands
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) – A Broward County man is accused of swindling an elderly woman out of thousands of dollars for fake air duct cleanings.
Sean Toltin, 45, made a first court appearance before a Broward County judge, Thursday, to face one charge of exploiting an elderly person and two charges of grand theft.
It's believed Toltin talked 90-year-old Jean Moore of Tamarac out of more than $3,000 between June 15 and June 24, 2013.
According to court documents, Toltin approached Moore using the fake name of "John Ryan".
At Moore's home, investigators said he managed to talk her into letting him inside to clean her air ducts for $30. Moore said he then convinced her that the ducts needed a mold treatment for several hundred more dollars.
Moore told investigators she drove Toltin to a check cashing facility for the money.
Totlin never did the work he promised and was paid to complete.
Moore claims Toltin returned to the home June 17 and once again convinced her that she needed more work on her home.
Moore said she drive Toltin to her bank for additional funds.
Investigators explained Toltin returned to Moore's home a third time on June 24 and again, convinced her to drive him to her bank, retrieve more funds and pay him for work he never performed.
According to Broward Sheriff's Office detectives, after three visits, investigators added up Toltin took $3,105 from Moore.
Toltin is listed as a resident of Broward Addiction and Recovery Center in Fort Lauderdale.
According to court records, Toltin has been twice before been convicted of exploiting the elderly in 2003 and 2004.
Toltin remains in jail.
