LITTLE HAVANA (CBSMiami) – A Little Havana neighborhood is back to being quiet and peaceful after a shooting claimed the life of a 24-year-old man.
Neighbors said they were startled by the sound of a gunshot shortly before 2:30 Sunday morning in the area of NW 3rd St. and 26th Ave.
"We heard a shot and when we woke up, police were out there investigating. There were a bunch of police officers and fire rescue," said neighbor Cesar Mayorga.
According to City of Miami Police, Miguel Valdes was leaving a friend's house when he was approached by a group of people. One of the people in the group took out a firearm.
When Valdes noticed the firearm he fled to his vehicle for safety, but the shooter fired into the vehicle striking Valdes.
"I was smoking my cigarette right there in the corner. We see him (the shooter) coming. He's standing in the middle of the street. We was talking. We turn around and all we hear is, 'pa pa pa!' He took off that way," said a witness who identified only as Carlos.
City of Miami Fire Rescue transported Valdes to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
At the scene, investigators took photographs and looked for potential pieces of evidence.
"Nothing like this had ever happened in this area. Up to this point, we don't know why this happened," said Mayorga.
Police said the motive in this homicide is still unknown and the investigation is ongoing.
