FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – The Broward Sheriff's Office said they have arrested the driver involved in a deadly, and reportedly intentional, hit and run in western Broward.
Late Thursday, 26-year-old Kyle Hannover arrived at the Broward County Jail charged with murder in the death of 82-year-old Luis Angel Dominguez at Holiday Park near Weston.
The incident happened early Wednesday evening near one of the boat ramps at the park.
BSO said it began when Dominguez, of Pembroke Pines, got into an argument with Hannover.
"The two engaged in some type of discussion. The suspect in this case picked up a rock and threw it at the victim's car. He then proceeded to get into his truck and intentionally run over the victim," said Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Gina Carter.
A critically injured Dominguez was taken to the hospital where he died.
Dominguez's family was left heartbroken following news of his death.
"He was not a violent person," said the victim's granddaughter, Damaris Riveron. "We're obviously heartbroken. You don't expect someone you love to go like this."
According to his family, Dominguez would go to Holiday Park often just to watch the boats.
"He was a good person loved by everyone," his son, Luis Dominguez Jr., told CBS4's Joan Murray.
Dominguez's daughter-in-law was watching news coverage of the deadly clash and immediately recognized his car.
"He's an old man, very happy. All his neighbors loved him, yeah," Vivian Sanchez said.
Surveillance cameras captured the hit-and-run driver leaving the area in a white 2000 Ford F-150 two-door extended cab with a small trailer toting a 10 to 12 foot flat-bottom boat.
Detectives recovered the pickup truck Thursday afternoon.
"What we're focusing on right now is finding the man who killed the man at the boat ramp yesterday," Carter said.
And authorities did just that, apprehending Hannover – the man they said is responsible – by Thursday evening.
Dominguez's family was confident the hit-and-run driver would be caught.
"I feel sad for the gentleman. He took someone's life and now he took his own life," Riveron said.
This is not Hannover's first brush with the law.
Court records show that in April 2015 Hannover was arrested for aggravated assault with a firearm. His ex-girlfriend, Karissa Myers, told investigators that Hannover threatened her with a shotgun inside their Dania Beach apartment after she said he was too tired from partying to take her to her teaching job. She said he threatened her with a shotgun.
She recorded the incident on her cellphone. On the video you see Hannover pick up a shotgun and say, "Get out. Get out of my house. Leave. There's the door. Go"
She says Hannover told her, "…that he would shoot me and shoot the cops after the video, after I stopped it because I was terrified he would come after me at that point."
Court records show Hannover was eventually placed on probation in the case. She described Hannover as racist and said he was possessive of her and angry at many.
"It's unfortunate and I would never wish this on him but he took a downward spiral and we all saw this coming, I feel like," Myers told CBS 4's Carey Codd.
Hannover arrived at the jail wearing a fire rescue t-shirt.
CBS4 News has learned that a few years ago Hannover went through the fire academy and was about to graduate and on the eve of graduation the fire academy realized Hannover had a health issue and they failed him.
Hannover is expected to stand before a judge Friday on the murder charge.
