Rothstein Partner Pleads Guilty To Charges Connected To Ponzi Scheme
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami/AP) — The former law partner of convicted Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein pleaded guilty, Friday, to charges of violating federal campaign finance laws.
Russell Adler, 52, made the plea at a brief hearing in Fort Lauderdale federal court.
Prosecutors said Adler helped orchestrate thousands of dollars in bundled contributions from the now-defunct Rothstein Rosenfeldt Adler law firm's employees and attorneys to John McCain's 2008 campaign for president and Charlie Crist's run in 2010 for the U.S. Senate. Authorities say the contributions were illegally reimbursed by the law firm.
Adler faces a maximum of five years in prison at a June 27 sentencing.
Rothstein is serving 50 years behind bars for a $1.2 billion scam involving investments in fake legal settlements. More than a dozen others have also been convicted.
