POMPANO BEACH (CBSMiami) - A man trying to escape capture by a sheriff's deputy died after he jumped into a canal.
Deputies patrolling in the area of McNab Road and Andrews Avenue after a spate of recent burglaries to businesses there came across two men on bicycles Sunday night around 11:15 p.m.
The bikes had no lights, but the men were carrying flashlights. As deputies questioned the two men, the sheriff's office said one of the men was cooperative. He reportedly had a large number of coins in his pocket and someone else's identification in a wallet.
The second man, who had a woman's coin purse in his waistband, bolted when deputies began to question him.
As the man ran east Southwest 12th Avenue a deputy attempted to Taser him but missed.
The sheriff's office said the man cut through the parking lot of St. Henry Catholic Church, shedding his clothes as he ran. Behind the church, he jumped into the canal and swam out several feet. The deputy saw him surface once and then sink under the water. The deputy took off his gun belt and jumped in but he was unable to find him.
BSO's Dive Team located his body around 12:15 a.m. Monday. The deputy was transported to Broward Health North as a precaution after swallowing some water.
