Man Charged With Murder In Craigslist Robbery Gone Wrong
CORAL SPRING (CBSMiami) – Two men who reportedly wanted to rob whoever responded to their Craigslist ad for a cell phone for sale had the tables turned on them by the 'buyer'.
One ended up dead, the other charged with murder.
Wednesday morning, around 12:20 a.m., Coral Springs received a call about gunshots in 2900 Riverside Drive.
When officers arrived they found Jason Mageau lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest. Mageau's friend, Duwayne Lewis, was with him.
Lewis told police that he and Mageau were attempting to sell a Samsung cell phone when the buyer attempted to rob them. Lewis stated Mageau was shot after he did not comply.
Mageau was taken to Broward Health North where he died.
Around 2:15 a.m. Coral Springs police received a call from Dermaine Spencer who said he was involved in the shooting.
Spencer told police where he was and officers were sent to talk with him. He told police he was the one who responded to the Craigslist ad but when he showed up to buy the phone Lewis and Mageau attempted to rob him.
During the robbery, Spencer said Mageau pulled a gun and hit him with it several times in the head. Spencer told police that's when he got his own gun out of his vehicle and fired, striking Mageau.
Spencer said he left the area for his own safety. Spencer showed police his gun and the one used in the attempted robbery which had fallen into his vehicle during the incident.
Lewis was later charged with murder for his involvement in the robbery that contributed to Mageau's death.
