MIAMI (CBSMiami) - An arrest has been made in a hit and run crash in Brownsville in which a man was critically injured.
On the morning of December 8th, Michael Rodriguez was heading east on NW 5th Street when he was tee-boned at the intersection of NW 27th Avenue by a Ford Fusion by 28-year old Silvestre Diaz, according to police.
Diaz was reportedly speeding to beat the amber light when he slammed into Rodriguez's Hyundai Accent.
After the crash, police say Diaz, 28, got out of his car and saw a seriously injured Rodriguez in the car. Diaz's passenger then got out of the car and fled barefoot through a nearby apartment complex.
When police arrived both Diaz and an acquaintance of his, who had walked up to the crash scene, were questioned as to whether they had witnessed what had happened. Diaz's acquaintance said the driver who hit Hernandez and his passenger had both ran off through the nearby apartment complex. Diaz then walked away without telling the officer what had really happened, according to police.
Rodriguez, 33, was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Investigators named Diaz a person of interest in the case. On Thursday, December 10th, they picked him up in Doral.
During questioning, Diaz reportedly admitted to smoking marijuana before the crash and that he had been driving with a suspended license.
He was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving injuries, leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage and driving with a suspended license.
