Man Accused Of Trying To Drown Police Dog
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A Miami Gardens man is facing a host of charges after he allegedly tried to drown a police dog.
Around 5:20 a.m. Wednesday, the Broward Sheriff's Office received a call about a burglary in progress at "The Oaks" condominiums on Stirling Road in Dania Beach. The caller said they saw several people go into a fenced off area which was under construction.
When deputies arrived they spotted three men take off into a wooded area with canals. Deputies with K-9s went after them.
One of the individuals, identified as 24-year old Shalaun Dean, jumped in a canal with a police dog on his heels. According to his arrest report, Dean "attempted to pull the BSO K-9 under water in an attempt to permanently harm or kill the K-9 unit."
Deputies were able to take Dean into custody along with a second person. The third person escaped.
During a search of construction site, Broward sheriff's investigators discovered that the men were after the copper coils in the building's air conditioning units, according to the report. They found 26 air conditioning units were dismantled or partially dismantled in an attempt to remove their coils and fan units.
Deputies found 13 air conditioning coils inside the trio's vehicle which was parked in front of the fence, according to the report. Two of the coil units were found in the grass near a bag of copper piping that was also removed from the air conditioning units. Burglary tools were found nearby.
The sheriff's office said the stolen items plus the damage was estimated to be around $60,000.
Dean was charged with burglary, possession of burglary tools, grand theft, resisting arrest violence and causing great harm to a law enforcement animal.
